214 - Help for trips organised for refugee and asylum seeking families - July 2025

We are pleased to be back with news of donation  214 . This week we can tell you about a donation we have made to the Penistone Refugee and Asylum Seeker Support Group.  Do have a look at this link to find out about the fabulous support they offer to refugees and asylum seekers arriving in their area.  https://barnsley. cityofsanctuary.org/2025/07/ 01/new-penistone-group- welcomes-refugees . Also attached is the July 2025 City of Sanctuary Newsletter which the group asked us to share for anyone interested in any further information about the wonderful work of the various groups in Barnsley.   As well as offering support for day to day essentials for these families, who often arrive with nothing, the group organises trips in the summer, which give families the chance to see different parts of Yorkshire and have some fun. They have some wonderful events lined up, including visits to Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Graves Park in Sheffield and a...

213 - Guiding subs for girl - July 2025

One of our members asked if we could help a girl who attends a Sheffield Guiding Unit .   She joined because her parents wanted her to get involved with Guides to help develop her confidence and self esteem.  Initially, because her parents are from a very low income family and receiving Universal Credit, paying the annual subs of £150 was not possible for them and they were grateful to the Guide leader's discretion in waiving the fees for a trial period. The girl is really enjoying being part of the unit and would love to be able to continue with Girl Guiding - her confidence has grown and she has new friends. Our member asked if we could help and we have organised to pay £300 to cover subs for the remaining 2 years the girl can attend guides.  She is so committed to the group and it makes a big difference to give her the security that her place is safe and her family do not have to worry about finding the money for her to continue doing somethi...

212 - Housing deposit for a family escaping Domestic abuse - July 2025

Not surprisingly, we are receiving a lot of nominations at the moment and doing our very best to meet the demand, working with members to ensure we can spread our funds as far as possible.  Thank you all for continuing to send us your weekly contributions - without them we would not be able to agree to help the vast majority of the nominations we receive.  Please do tell others about us - more members would allow us to ensure we can continue to meet the rising demand.    This week our support goes to a woman who has been experiencing awful domestic abuse in silence for many years. She is now being supported to get out of this awful situation with her children. This is never an easy task and she has come up against some disgraceful barriers from agencies who should know better.   This has inevitably had a dreadful impact and those supporting her are now helping her look for private accommodation to allow her to move out to safety. ...

211 - a new washing machine and clothes for a family - July 2025

We are lucky enough to have a number of members who work in organisations that provide vital support to families in Sheffield. We are always pleased to be able to help them plug gaps when they can see something more is needed that will really help ease some pressures for families. We were recently asked to help a young couple with 2 children under 4 years. Challenging circumstances mean the family are having difficulties with daily family life and are accessing support to overcome these. They are experiencing financial difficulties and find it hard to manage. The family are in need of a new washing machine as theirs is leaking and causing damage to clothes and their home. The family is also in need of clothes. Their support worker has accessed support from Baby Basics for clothes for the children but they do not cover adults, therefore we were asked if we could help purchase some clothes for the adults. We were only too pleased to send £500 for the family to be supported to buy...
