10. Cathedral Archer Project, Sheffield - helping homeless in these challenging times April 2020

This week, thank you to our member who nominated the Cathedral Archer Project in Sheffield. We are pleased to be able to send them £250.

Our member told us that like many charities, Cathedral Archer Project has had to cancel important fundraising events during the Covid-19 crisis. So more so than ever they are looking for some financial support, to enable them to continue the incredible work they do for the homeless in Sheffield.

The Cathedral Archer Project (CAP) helps homeless and vulnerable adults from sleeping bag to employment and fulfilling and enjoyable lives. They believe that every person who comes through their doors is an individual with talents, the ability to live a healthy, sustainable life, and who, in time and with support, will have aspirations they want to achieve.

In normal times they would be running an ‘engagement, stabilisation and fulfilment’ programme to support the homeless but because of the multitude of restrictions caused by Covid-19 CAP have been operating a substantially reduced service for the last few weeks that was aimed at supporting rough sleepers and those not on benefits.

Initially they were letting 30 people into their centre at any given time for food, showers, laundry (so only doing a part of their service!). However, in order to best follow social distancing guidelines the project moved to a takeaway service for breakfast and lunch allowing one person in the building at any given time for showers etc.

Now that Sheffield City Council has offered accommodation to all rough sleepers they have seen a decline in the number of people dropping into the service. However, although in accommodation these people still need support, and there are still rough sleepers on the streets. As a result CAP are working with other agencies in Sheffield to provide hot food and a sandwich meal once a day to those in accommodation. The Project is acting as a food hub - preparing meals to be delivered, and also as a place where those still rough sleeping can access the support they need. Our money will help them to continue to offer this service.

We keep saying it - but thank you all for your support. The Cathedral Archer Project were so delighted to receive our donation and we are glad to be able to offer a little support to an organisation that helps very vulnerable people in our community.  https://www.archerproject.org.uk
