33 - Support for a bereaved family - January 2021

This week our recipients, a mum and her young children, lost their husband/father to COVID.

Family Voice, who do truly invaluable work supporting families in the Sharrow/ Nether Edge area, have been working with the family since the mum came to them in February 2020 for English classes.  The organisation has helped the family with food, essentials and furniture over the past few months, as they were struggling financially.


Family Voice is going to use the £500 to help relieve some of the financial stress the family is going to have over the coming month and is also planning to use some of it to pay someone to support mum in her first language, as she grieves on her own, isolated at home with her children.

  One of our members asked if we could help S, who recently collapsed in pain, ending up in A&E with a bulging disc in her lower back.  Now back home, she is on crutches, in  immense pain with the disc and sciatica so she can't work - which is a big problem for them as she is self employed.  Her husband works shifts in a local hospital and is taking on more shifts to cover their bills.  She also has problems with her son who has adhd and under support as he often struggles to be able to go to school. 198- a donation to Read Easy Sheffield to help train new coaches - March 2025

One of our members asked if we could support Read Easy Sheffield, a small, local organisation he has been volunteering with.   Read Easy Sheffield aims to improve adult literacy in Sheffield by recruiting, training, organising and supporting volunteer coaches to help adult members of the public to improve their reading. These coaches work 1:1 with learners to assess their current reading standard then deliver individually tailored coaching to help them to improve their literacy.  They have established and are working on establishing new partnerships with local organisations who refer learners to them, including libraries, housing associations and further education institutions. They are affiliated to the national charity Read Easy UK, and follow their well-proven methods.  Improved literacy skills impact people in all aspects of life, including employment, physical and mental health and connection with their community. 56 - repairing window after break in at St Wilfrid's Centre - Sept 2021

Our 56th donation goes to St Wilfrid's Centre a well known charity in Sheffield that supports vulnerable, isolated and homeless adults. Sadly there was recently a break-in at the Centre, so 500 Together has donated £190 to meet the costs of replacing the window that was severely damaged in the break-in. The charity say they are extremely grateful to everyone from 500 Together, and send a big thank you for our help. Repairing the window has meant that clients can feel secure and comfortable again and it also means the Centre doesn’t have to use vital funds on repairing the window and can use it to support the people who need help instead.
