43 - Helping someone with their debt as they recover from ill health - April 2021

This week we have been able to help P, who was nominated by a member who joined us after hearing about 500 together on BBC Radio Sheffield. Our member told us he was worried about P because he was getting into debt after suffering ill health. P had been suffering with stomach pains for years and just before lockdown had the first of 2 operations to try to resolve the problem - the second of which has been delayed because of the lockdown.  He has used up his sick pay allowance and is falling behind on his bills and knows he will get into more debt when he has to take further time off work for the next surgery.  The combination of the health and financial stresses have been taking their toll and we hope that our £500 will take a bit of the pressure off, allow him pay off some debt and help tide him over as he gets back to full fitness and can return to work and some normality in life with his 2 kids.  We know he was delighted to receive our support. We wish him all the best for the futur

42 - Helping a family settle into new home - March 2021

Image
Donation 42 allows us to send £500 to help a single mum and her children who are having to move home. For safeguarding reasons we cannot go into details, but the Mum has to leave the family home and provide sole care for all the children. She cannot take a lot of the household items with her to their new home, so as you can imagine it is not only a traumatic move for her and the children but also an expensive one. This case was brought to us via a community worker in Sheffield who will work with Mum and do all they can to help the family settle in, using your donation to get household essentials like beds and bedding for her children. We hope this donation from 500 Together will go towards helping this family start to rebuild their lives and we send them our very best wishes. Thank you as always for supporting our group and allowing us to respond quickly when we receive urgent nominations like this. This donation is going to make a massive difference to the family.

41 - Fresh food packs for families - March 2021

Our 41st donation goes to the  Winn Gardens Community  in Sheffield, where we have given £500 to fund fresh food packs for families who are helped by the Winn Gardens food bank (which is affiliated to the S6 foodbank). Thanks to one of our members for making this nomination, an area he knows well and that was recently featured in a Channel 4 programme:  https://www. channel4.com/.../home- schooling-affecting... We got in touch with Suzanne Morton, who featured in the programme and talked to her all about her role as a community pioneer. She does some absolutely amazing work there and we were able to make our donation via Suzanne who runs the Winn Garden food bank.  Suzanne messaged us to say: 'We just wanted to say thank you so so much for the £500 donation that you gave to us for our fresh fruit and vegetables. Fruit and veg is so very expensive and is one of the things that families with very little money are just not going to buy. And yet is absolutely essential for nutrition
