46 - Support for a long Covid sufferer - May 2021

Image
We are pleased to be able to brighten up this rainy day with news of our 46th donation, which goes to Andy, a hard-working family man. Andy contracted Covid 19 earlier this year and was in hospital for several weeks including some time in intensive care.  After returning to his Sheffield home, Andy is still struggling and can only walk a few steps before having to rest and use oxygen. He has managed to get outside into his garden, but he needs a wheelchair to help him do this. Andy is fortunate to have a loving and supportive family who are doing everything they can to care for him. His wife was also unwell with Covid and is recovering too, but sadly has recently been made redundant, making a hard situation even more difficult.  We hope the £500 for Andy will help to ease the burden of the situation he has found himself in through no fault of his own, and he continues to make a recovery back to full strength.

45 - Supplying a gate to keep garden secure for family - May 2021

Our 45th donation of £100  shows that a little can go a long way.  Our member Penny told us about a lady we will refer to as H because she needs her anonymity protecting. H had told Penny that she could not allow her young son to play freely in their back garden because there was nothing to stop him running out onto the busy main road.  She really needed a gate at the side of her house but was not in a position to pay for this herself.   It became much more urgent when he learnt how to open the backdoor by himself and he did manage to wander off down the road.  Luckily he was found safe by neighbours a few streets away, but it made the situation more critical.  It has been difficult to find anyone with availability to fit the gate, let alone at a reasonable cost.  But then a lovely friend of H’s offered to do it as a favour and asked just £100 for the materials.   We were only too happy to fund this, meaning H and her son can start to enjoy their outside space without constant vigilanc

44 - Providing laptops to recovering addicts to help them help others - May 2021

For our 44th donation we are supporting a nomination made by one of our members who works with Sheffield Community Safety Team, for Sheffield City Council.   She asked if we could help a couple of women who are activity participants and volunteers in Sheffield Recovery Forum.  Both women are in recovery themselves and are keen to help support others looking for a route away from their addictions.   Their nominator, who has worked closely with them both throughout the lockdown, explained how they have both been working hard using their mobile phones but that the provision of a couple of basic laptops would really open up so many more possibilities for them.   She told us about Joanne & Lesley.    Joanne, who was once street homeless and is in recovery from substance abuse, is keen to start volunteering to support people on the streets and get involved in meetings.  She has been a key voice in recent consultations – but she doesn't have access to a computer/laptop and providing h
