93 - Household goods for lady fleeing domestic abuse - Sept 2022

This week we can tell you about donation 93.

One of our members asked if we might be able to help out her friend and colleague, who confided that she had recently fled domestic abuse with her 3 year old daughter and pet dog.

For her safety, we want to maintain her anonymity, so we will call her H.

H initially moved into a relative’s home, but had found a privately rented, furnished accommodation to resettle in. However, as her ex-partner had always had control of finances she had no money herself, beyond wages from a part time job, which were going towards rent, childcare and food. With her ex partner denying access to any of their household items, she was moving into her new home with very little, and financially unable to purchase anything to help her and her young daughter settle in.

We spoke to H, and it was clear what an impact us sending her £500 would have, as she could go out that day to buy household goods - and in particular new blinds for the property, as she was concerned about ensuring privacy to feel safe from her ex partner being able to see into their home.

H has since told us how she has put your donation to such good use, buying the blinds, as well as kitchen items, bedding, towels and things for the bathroom - allowing her and her daughter to feel comfortable as they rebuild their lives. Now H is in a property with proof of tenancy and council tax she can apply for further financial support for housing.

H asked us to pass this message onto you all:

Oh thank you so much. I honestly cannot thank you enough. I can’t tell you how much this has helped me and my daughter. I will be forever grateful.

This is another example of how the immediacy of our donations allows us to reach people at times when they need it most. We wish H and her daughter the very best in their new home and are pleased we could offer some help at such a stressful and challenging time for them.
