103 - donation to Saffron - Women's Counselling & Therapy Service - Dec 2022

News of donation 103, which sees us supporting Saffron - Sheffield Women’s Counselling and Therapy Service - who offer a much needed free counselling and psychotherapy service to women in Sheffield who have experienced trauma or abuse.  https://www.saffronsheffield.org.uk/

One of our members asked if we could support their ‘All She Wants for Christmas is…’ campaign and we have donated £250 through the Big Give scheme, which means our donation gets matched, taking it to £500.

For over 30 years, Saffron Sheffield has provided specialised trauma therapy for many of Sheffield’s most vulnerable women.

It is estimated that in Sheffield there are over 34,000 women survivors of abuse. Trauma and abuse can take many forms and can happen to women of all ages, backgrounds and ethnicities.
As a specialist mental health charity, they provide 1:1 weekly therapy sessions and well-being support to local women negatively impacted by trauma. This can include sexual abuse, domestic abuse, exploitation, rape, neglect, torture, trafficking, experiencing or witnessing an accident or crime, traumatic bereavement, war, kidnapping or genocide.

These experiences can significantly impact mental health resulting in trauma symptoms, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, flashbacks, dissociation, self-harming and suicidal thoughts. Repeat victimisation is commonplace, and survivors of abuse and trauma are at greater risk of developing drug/alcohol addictions and eating disorders.

This year Saffron has seen a 133% increase in demand for their service. Between January and September, they delivered 1,476 hours of 1:1 therapy. 53 women completed therapy with them during this time, and they continue to see 61 women every week.

We were pleased to make a donation to their campaign and help them continue to provide this important support to the women who need it.
