121 - A new washing machine for Ben's Centre - May 2023

 We are pleased to be back with news of donation 121 which has allowed us to help the wonderful Ben’s Centre in Sheffield - https://www.benscentre.org


Ben’s Centre is a Sheffield charity based in the city centre, that has been supporting homeless and vulnerable people for over 20 years, particularly those with alcohol and substance misuse issues. The centre provides a welcoming place, hot food and drinks as well as free access to clothing, toiletries and washing facilities.  

 

People who use Ben’s centre often struggle with their mental health as well as addiction and the day centre is a safe place, where people can hang out, have a conversation, relax, watch their favourite show on TV, go online, play a game, do various activities, as well as get the support they need through the centre or referrals to other organisations.  The clients can also have a shower and have their clothes washed and get access to toiletries and clean clothes.  There is also a hard working outreach team working with people on the streets.

 

One of our members who volunteers at Ben’s Centre asked if we could buy a new washing machine, which will be used to wash clothing for people who attend the centre and to wash towels that are used  there. The current washing machine is a little tired and appears to be on its last legs and doesn’t work as well as it should.

 

We were pleased to send £500 to Ben’s Centre, which will allow them to get a new machine delivered and fitted, as well as some additional funds to purchase supplies for the outreach team to hand out to vulnerable people on streets during the warm summer days - such as bottles of water and sun hats. Loving the warm weather optimism!

The money has enabled us to buy a brand new B rated 9kg washing machine.  The one we currently have is quite old and rusty and the drum is much smaller, the wash cycles are also much longer than the new machine will be.

 

We are absolutely delighted that we have been able to get a new machine.  The best part of this being that we will be able to offer a more efficient laundry service to our clients.

 

By Wednesday afternoon we will be up to our elbows in soap suds, all thanks to you [our member] and 500 Together. 



Another brilliant nomination and we are so pleased to be able to support Ben's Centre in this way.

For our latest donation we are sending £500 to Francine at  Rehouse to Rehome , a Sheffield based charity supporting and empowering victims and survivors of Domestic Abuse. 156 - Helping a mum & daughter settle into their new home - April 2023

This week we can tell you about donation 156, which has gone to A and her young daughter. After spending some time in a women's refuge, they have been living in temporary accommodation, waiting to be allocated council housing.  This has finally happened, but as is so often the case, the house they are expected to move into is unfurnished and uncarpeted.  We were able to put A in touch with some charities who could help her source some furniture and apply for funds to get carpets and she worked hard to do as much as she could to set up her new home, but asked if we could help her with the cost of getting blinds, as well as some home essentials, like an iron, ironing board and vacuum cleaner.  We were pleased to be able to send her £500 towards these items.   A has asked us to send her thanks to you all for supporting her and helping her and her daughter settle into their new home. We wish them all the best and as always feel very privileged to have been able to help.

118 - Helping SWWOP set up a 'flexi-pot' to allow them to support women in emergency situations.

We often say how lucky we are to have among our members people who work & volunteer in some of Sheffield’s extraordinary local organisations and charities.     We always welcome nominations from them - they see so much need on a daily basis, so when they ask for our help we know our contribution will make a difference. On this occasion SWWOP (Sheffield Working Women's Opportunities Project) , an organisation which provides intensive support to vulnerable women involved in street prostitution, asked if we could help them. SWWOP’s primary service is making contact with women involved in street prostitution and being a friendly face to offer non-judgmental and confidential support and information.  They provide street based outreach and drop in sessions, with an aim to improve the women’s health and safety.  https://www.swwop.org SWWOP told us that since the start of the cost-of-living crisis, they have seen the number of women they support involved in sex work almost triple.  Wom
