123 - Helping local charity fund the printing of their community newsletter - may 2023

Our latest donation of £133 is a little different from some we have made in the past, but one we think will have a really beneficial impact locally.

We were approached by one of our members who works for Darnall Well Being - a local charity we have supported in the past when they have told us about individuals they work with, who we have been able to help.

Darnall Well Being (DWB) provides health & wellbeing services in one of the most deprived areas of Sheffield – the Darnall Ward. Their core remit is to address health inequalities. They work with local people to help them achieve their goals and build resilience by focusing on what matters to them.  https://darnallwellbeing.org.uk/home/about/

At the start of Covid, they introduced a 16 page colour newsletter, the Community Connector , which was published 3 times a year, and was delivered to every household in Darnall ward (8,300 households). They originally started this with Covid funding, because they were very conscious of the digital exclusion in the area and the amount of isolation that people were struggling with.

So the Community Connector was created by a group of local organisations to share information and news about support, activities and groups in the local area, to help people find out what was available to them locally. They also used to share key messages about staying safe during Covid and then about the importance of getting the vaccine, and got this information translated into key community languages, to help make sure it reached more people.

DWB could see the positive impact the newsletter had and recognised that even post Covid often the best way to share community information like this is through a physical newsletter.  Unfortunately though, they have been struggling to find the funds to print and distribute the newsletter.  They have recently received funding of over £600 for a 500 edition print run through Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park - which is great, but for an additional £133 they could increase this to 1000 editions.

Our member asked if 500 together might be able to donate this extra to allow an additional 500 copies to be printed, which could then be taken to community buildings, local shops, libraries, schools, etc for people to pick up and read/take home. Content is submitted by around 40 different local groups and organisations, and DWB staff know that people have found new activities and support in their local area as a result of reading it, so printing as many copies as possible will have a huge impact.

The booklet is now in circulation, and available to download online as well -  https://darnallwellbeing.org.uk/news/newsletters/community-connector-spring-2023/
