134 - Helping young mum clear debts after leaving abusive husband - Sept 2023

We are pleased to be back with news of donation 134.

This week your money has gone to help a brave young woman who has recently left a 10 year emotionally abusive relationship with her two young children.

She has been really strong and courageous leaving her ex, but she is currently struggling.

She does work but is on a low income and her wage is topped up by universal credit. She found a flat and has moved out with the children, but the flat is unfurnished. She left with literally nothing so she has had to source everything which she is trying to do by buying second hand and using community groups on Facebook for things that people might be gifting like children’s clothes and toys etc.  She has been signed up to the S12 pantry project and she is going to see if they can help with the cost of food etc.

When she moved into her flat, she had to pay a deposit which was one month’s rent and due to this she has no disposable income. She has had to pay the baby’s nursery costs this month and universal credit were supposed to reimburse her, but this hasn’t happened yet.  Her ex was supposed to be contributing to the costs, but he has lost his job and hasn’t done so. As a result, she hasn’t been able to pay her council tax bill and is two months behind on her energy bill.

Our member who made the nomination is concerned that as she is getting into more debt, she will never be able to clear it and this is impacting on her mental health, which has already suffered as a result of being in an abusive relationship for 10 years.

She wants to feel empowered by leaving and starting afresh - but the reality is scary.  She is struggling.

Our £500 has allowed her to clear her debts - we hope this will give her some breathing space and improve the chances of her succeeding on her own with her children and moving forward to a happier life away from her ex.

We send her lots of love and luck.

Thanks again to our member who nominated this woman.  We are so pleased we could help.  Your pounds make such a difference.  Thank you all.
