177 - Helping family of terminally ill 5 year old get away on holiday - Oct 2024

We are pleased to be back with news of our latest donation and this week we can tell you about donation 177.

At the end of August, one of our members sent us an urgent request to help a local family get away on a short break with their incredible 5 year old daughter C.  We know all our donations make a big difference, but this one is particularly moving and one we were so pleased we could help with.

C is on palliative care. In this short life she has endured 53 operations.

C’s parents are around the clock carers. She has a little brother who is 2 and quite active. C’s mum explained that with her daughter’s health deteriorating each month they want to snatch hold of every opportunity to spend as a whole family. It’s coming up to C’s 6th birthday and they never thought they would make it this far.

The family love visiting the seaside, C especially. Their favourite place is Primrose Valley - a holiday park in Filey and they had a last minute opportunity to go there at the beginning of September.  The site is fully accessible, which is ideal for C, who is non-speaking and immobile so she travels in a manual adapted buggy.

Their accommodation had been paid for by another charity, but the family really needed our £500 to help with the costs of paying for fuel, food, but most importantly, the extras -  giving C and her brother opportunities while they were there - ensuring they could visit arcades, go to the fair, buy ice creams, join in craft groups and go swimming - which C loves as it helps her relax and helps sooth the pain she lives with.  As well as buying a birthday cake and going out to dinner as a family to celebrate C’s birthday.

It was an honour to be able to help the family to make this holiday special. Thanks to your regular contributions to 500 together we can say yes to these kinds of nominations immediately and get the money out to families without delay - which was so essential in this case, where the family had to arrange things last minute when this special opportunity arose.

We were glad to hear that C and her family had a wonderful trip away and they made some very special memories.
