183 - Books for a Specialist school for autistic pupils - Nov 24





With this donation - made almost exactly 5 years after our very first donation - we have now given away an incredible £80,000.  We cannot thank you enough for being a fabulous part of this group.  It is amazing how your weekly £1 has allowed us to do so much.


It is a lovely coincidence that the nominator for this week’s donation news was someone who was with us 5 years ago at the very beginning, and we are grateful for her thoughtful nomination - and also for taking the time to write about how the money has been spent and its wonderful impact.


Can I please say a huge THANK YOU to 500T. 


I work as a Teaching Assistant for Bents Green School on Ringinglow Road. We are a specialist school for Autistic students aged 11 to 16 (and Post 16).


Our library has lots of very well used books and are becoming a little tired looking. Also the curriculum has moved on and we need to reflect the new learning topics. We needed new books to suit the topics - ‘Down on the Farm’, ‘Polar Explorers', ‘Prehistoric Life’, ‘Festivals and Special Times’, ‘Myself and My Body’ and ‘Outer Space’. 


Sadly, our school budget does not stretch to purchase new library books so just before the summer I contacted 500T with a wish to purchase relevant new topic books. 500T approved the request and £500 was granted! We were over the moon! 


I then contacted Rhyme and Reason, the most magical, quaintest book shop at Hunters Bar to see if they could help us. They not only agreed to help, but incredibly, and so generously, donated their profits to add to the £500 which enabled us to buy more books. Another massive shout out to Richard the owner and Sadie and Anna who sourced and matched the books to the schools curriculum and various differentiated needs. 


Bents Green School are so grateful for their loving support in this huge request. In total we were able to purchase 63 stunning, relevant and well suited modern books for our students. These beautiful books were immediately put to use in the classrooms, the students are using them everyday in their learning. 


500T, I am so privileged to be part of your group. Thank you from all the staff and students at Bents Green School. You are all wonderful Xxxx

For our latest donation we are sending £500 to Francine at  Rehouse to Rehome , a Sheffield based charity supporting and empowering victims and survivors of Domestic Abuse. Our £500 will go towards buying a cooker/fridge/ washing machine for a family that Francine is helping to rehome.  Francine tells us that she has seen a significant rise in requests for help since the beginning of the pandemic. Our donation has been very gratefully received and Francine has kindly sent us this powerful message explaining why: Not having essential household goods often becomes a real and practical barrier that prevents a survivor from leaving an abusive relationship. Even when individuals gather up the immense courage it takes to flee an abusive relationship and, if they are lucky enough to be re-housed by the authorities, there is a strong possibility that they will not get the financial support required to furnish that property with even the most basic of household goods which are a necess...

156 - Helping a mum & daughter settle into their new home - April 2023

This week we can tell you about donation 156, which has gone to A and her young daughter. After spending some time in a women's refuge, they have been living in temporary accommodation, waiting to be allocated council housing.  This has finally happened, but as is so often the case, the house they are expected to move into is unfurnished and uncarpeted.  We were able to put A in touch with some charities who could help her source some furniture and apply for funds to get carpets and she worked hard to do as much as she could to set up her new home, but asked if we could help her with the cost of getting blinds, as well as some home essentials, like an iron, ironing board and vacuum cleaner.  We were pleased to be able to send her £500 towards these items.   A has asked us to send her thanks to you all for supporting her and helping her and her daughter settle into their new home. 68 - Buying 3 single beds for a family - December 2021

For donation   68   we have used £440 to buy 3 single beds for a family of 6.   We cannot share details of the family's situation, but these beds, which have been delivered this week in time for Christmas, will mean everyone having their own bed for the first time in quite a while.   We spoke to the mum to arrange the delivery - she was so happy and excited as the beds for 3 of their children would mean she and her husband would be able to reclaim their own bed, which they had relinquished for 2 of the children.  It is going to make a big difference to them. It's another lovely donation.  Thank you to our nominator for spotting the need and asking us to help out.
