197 - Help with holiday costs for a family - March 2025

 With donation 197 we have helped a family of 4 have a much needed break.


One of our members told us about M, the dad in the family, who has had lifelong diabetes. This has led to kidney failure, as well as other complications including sight loss and terrible infections. 

Christmas was a particularly hard time for them as it came to a medical crisis. M needed a port installed in order to have dialysis. However his veins wouldn’t heal enough to support it. There was a concern that he would not be well enough to undergo dialysis at all. And this would ultimately jeopardise any chance of a kidney transplant, which is their end goal. 

Thankfully recently, his port healed and dialysis was able to start. This gave the family back some hope that they might have a chance of establishing a new normal. And, they have a treatment schedule now that means that a short break would be possible in England. 

Sadly, due to his repeated illnesses and periods of sickness, M no longer qualifies for any sick pay through work. As such, the family’s finances are severely impacted.

They had the opportunity offered to book a subsidised short break for the summer holidays through Let’s Host -  an organisation run by a kidney transplant recipient. Our member asked if we might be able to pay £500 for a Friday-Monday stay this summer so that the family can spend quality time together.

She explained that as well as M's health needs, the family has other day-to-day challenges and really needs some rest and family time to look forward to. We were only too pleased to help.

For our latest donation we are sending £500 to Francine at  Rehouse to Rehome , a Sheffield based charity supporting and empowering victims and survivors of Domestic Abuse. Our £500 will go towards buying a cooker/fridge/ washing machine for a family that Francine is helping to rehome.  Francine tells us that she has seen a significant rise in requests for help since the beginning of the pandemic. Our donation has been very gratefully received and Francine has kindly sent us this powerful message explaining why: Not having essential household goods often becomes a real and practical barrier that prevents a survivor from leaving an abusive relationship. 156 - Helping a mum & daughter settle into their new home - April 2023

This week we can tell you about donation 156, which has gone to A and her young daughter. After spending some time in a women's refuge, they have been living in temporary accommodation, waiting to be allocated council housing.  This has finally happened, but as is so often the case, the house they are expected to move into is unfurnished and uncarpeted.  We were able to put A in touch with some charities who could help her source some furniture and apply for funds to get carpets and she worked hard to do as much as she could to set up her new home, but asked if we could help her with the cost of getting blinds, as well as some home essentials, like an iron, ironing board and vacuum cleaner.  We were pleased to be able to send her £500 towards these items.   A has asked us to send her thanks to you all for supporting her and helping her and her daughter settle into their new home. 68 - Buying 3 single beds for a family - December 2021

For donation   68   we have used £440 to buy 3 single beds for a family of 6.   We cannot share details of the family's situation, but these beds, which have been delivered this week in time for Christmas, will mean everyone having their own bed for the first time in quite a while.   We spoke to the mum to arrange the delivery - she was so happy and excited as the beds for 3 of their children would mean she and her husband would be able to reclaim their own bed, which they had relinquished for 2 of the children.  It is going to make a big difference to them. It's another lovely donation.  Thank you to our nominator for spotting the need and asking us to help out.
