205 - Help to fund a trip to Lapland UK for family - May 2025

 One of our members told us about B, a little girl who was diagnosed two years ago with Leukaemia, aged just 1.


She has undergone intensive treatment for the leukaemia including chemotherapy.  During the course of this treatment, she also had to have an emergency tracheostomy which meant that she lost the ability to speak.

 

Her parents have had to spend weeks in hospital to be fully trained in caring for her and her tracheostomy. She has spent the majority of her life in and out of hospital. Her mum has had to leave work to become a full time carer and relies heavily on family support.  It is so tough for them all.


Our member told us that their friends, who have been supporting them throughout, were secretly raising money to try to send the family to Lapland UK for a uniquely special experience.  They needed some help to reach their target so we sent them £500 and they were recently able to surprise the family with the tickets.  It was apparently a very emotional moment and is going to be such a special experience for the whole family when they take the trip in December.


This nomination came to us quite a few months ago.  The ups and downs of B's health meant that the friends had to delay telling the family about the trip.  We were delighted to hear that B is now a lot better, she’s finished her treatment and will start school in September.  She still isn’t able to speak as her vocal cords are still paralysed but hopefully in time this will correct itself.

198- a donation to Read Easy Sheffield to help train new coaches - March 2025

One of our members asked if we could support Read Easy Sheffield, a small, local organisation he has been volunteering with.   Read Easy Sheffield aims to improve adult literacy in Sheffield by recruiting, training, organising and supporting volunteer coaches to help adult members of the public to improve their reading. These coaches work 1:1 with learners to assess their current reading standard then deliver individually tailored coaching to help them to improve their literacy.  They have established and are working on establishing new partnerships with local organisations who refer learners to them, including libraries, housing associations and further education institutions. They are affiliated to the national charity Read Easy UK, and follow their well-proven methods.  Improved literacy skills impact people in all aspects of life, including employment, physical and mental health and connection with their community. 56 - repairing window after break in at St Wilfrid's Centre - Sept 2021

Our 56th donation goes to St Wilfrid's Centre a well known charity in Sheffield that supports vulnerable, isolated and homeless adults. Sadly there was recently a break-in at the Centre, so 500 Together has donated £190 to meet the costs of replacing the window that was severely damaged in the break-in. The charity say they are extremely grateful to everyone from 500 Together, and send a big thank you for our help. Repairing the window has meant that clients can feel secure and comfortable again and it also means the Centre doesn’t have to use vital funds on repairing the window and can use it to support the people who need help instead.
