223 - Bed and freezer for a family in need - October 2025

 With our latest donation we have helped a family - a parent and 2 adult children, one of whom has a disability - who are living in financial hardship, with significant debts.  They are receiving advice and working with a debt charity to get on top of this, but despite 2 of the family being in work there just isn't any money left to put aside for any larger household items. 


St Vincents were recently able to provide 2 single beds, but this left the 3rd adult on a blow up mattress, which she was struggling on, and they were also in need of a chest freezer.


Our member, who is involved with the organisation supporting them, asked if we could send £390, which would pay for a single divan bed and mattress as well as a freezer.


Of course we were happy to help.


As always, we send out a big thank you to you all for continuing to support us at 500 together.  We do believe that now more than ever, our small acts of collective kindness are so valuable - not just in the practical help they provide, but also in the support and solidarity they show to others who are finding things so incredibly hard.  Local groups like the one working with this family simply don’t have the resources to do as much as they would like, and we are always happy when our members who are associated with them come to us to ask if we can help.  


We love that our simple group can offer unconditional and, when necessary, immediate help - and we know from the feedback we receive, just how valuable that is.  Your weekly pounds are appreciated by so many.   Thank you for trusting us with them.

  One of our members asked if we could help S, who recently collapsed in pain, ending up in A&E with a bulging disc in her lower back.  Now back home, she is on crutches, in  immense pain with the disc and sciatica so she can't work - which is a big problem for them as she is self employed.  Her husband works shifts in a local hospital and is taking on more shifts to cover their bills.  She also has problems with her son who has adhd and under support as he often struggles to be able to go to school. 56 - repairing window after break in at St Wilfrid's Centre - Sept 2021

Our 56th donation goes to St Wilfrid's Centre a well known charity in Sheffield that supports vulnerable, isolated and homeless adults. Sadly there was recently a break-in at the Centre, so 500 Together has donated £190 to meet the costs of replacing the window that was severely damaged in the break-in. The charity say they are extremely grateful to everyone from 500 Together, and send a big thank you for our help. Repairing the window has meant that clients can feel secure and comfortable again and it also means the Centre doesn’t have to use vital funds on repairing the window and can use it to support the people who need help instead.

198- a donation to Read Easy Sheffield to help train new coaches - March 2025

One of our members asked if we could support Read Easy Sheffield, a small, local organisation he has been volunteering with.   Read Easy Sheffield aims to improve adult literacy in Sheffield by recruiting, training, organising and supporting volunteer coaches to help adult members of the public to improve their reading. These coaches work 1:1 with learners to assess their current reading standard then deliver individually tailored coaching to help them to improve their literacy.  They have established and are working on establishing new partnerships with local organisations who refer learners to them, including libraries, housing associations and further education institutions.
