226 - Money for a mum and her son who are struggling financially - October 2025

With donation 226 we have helped a mum and her young son who are really struggling financially.  With the support of their Social Prescribing Link Worker, we have given them £500 which they will use to buy food and basic provisions for as long as it lasts.


We cannot share any details, but Vicki had the pleasure of meeting her to organise the donation.  Her situation is truly dreadful and whilst the money we are able to give her won't change that, it was clear what a boost it gave her.  There is no doubt she will use our donation very carefully and she was so very grateful to know that our group of strangers wanted to help her.  

We don't often get to meet our recipients in person.  It is always very special when that happens, and we wish her and her son the very best and hope their situation improves very soon.

A big thank you to the member who made the nomination - it was also great to meet you and your team and get a glimpse of the amazing work you do in the community.

Please continue to send us your nominations.  We know how hard it is for so many people right now, and will be set to get increasingly difficult as we move into the winter months.  We are ready to help whenever we can.

  One of our members asked if we could help S, who recently collapsed in pain, ending up in A&E with a bulging disc in her lower back.  Now back home, she is on crutches, in  immense pain with the disc and sciatica so she can't work - which is a big problem for them as she is self employed.  Her husband works shifts in a local hospital and is taking on more shifts to cover their bills.  She also has problems with her son who has adhd and under support as he often struggles to be able to go to school. 56 - repairing window after break in at St Wilfrid's Centre - Sept 2021

Our 56th donation goes to St Wilfrid's Centre a well known charity in Sheffield that supports vulnerable, isolated and homeless adults. Sadly there was recently a break-in at the Centre, so 500 Together has donated £190 to meet the costs of replacing the window that was severely damaged in the break-in. The charity say they are extremely grateful to everyone from 500 Together, and send a big thank you for our help. Repairing the window has meant that clients can feel secure and comfortable again and it also means the Centre doesn’t have to use vital funds on repairing the window and can use it to support the people who need help instead.

198- a donation to Read Easy Sheffield to help train new coaches - March 2025

One of our members asked if we could support Read Easy Sheffield, a small, local organisation he has been volunteering with.   Read Easy Sheffield aims to improve adult literacy in Sheffield by recruiting, training, organising and supporting volunteer coaches to help adult members of the public to improve their reading. These coaches work 1:1 with learners to assess their current reading standard then deliver individually tailored coaching to help them to improve their literacy.  They have established and are working on establishing new partnerships with local organisations who refer learners to them, including libraries, housing associations and further education institutions.
