231 - Carpets for a woman being supported by Shelter - December 2025

We are pleased to be back with news of our latest donation, number 231.

Before we do that, can we say a big thank you for the lovely comments we received after our £100K announcement.  A warm welcome to a few new members - thank you to those of you who were able to tell others about us.  Your generosity and support means we can say yes when members come to us asking for help.

We are lucky to be supported by members who are involved with local charities, big and small.  They are at the coal face and come into contact with many of the people we are able to support.  They are all very thoughtful about when they ask us for help, only doing so when there are no other avenues to try.

This week our member at the Sheffield hub of Shelter asked if we might be able to help one of their clients, who is a victim of modern slavery and human trafficking.  She has just signed for a new property and has been awarded a washing machine, fridge-freezer, and cooker by Local Assistance Grant, but nothing else.   The team at Shelter are accessing other furniture through a referral to St Vincents.

The property is not in great condition and would benefit from carpets, for which there are no grants that they are able to access.  We have sent £500, which will pay for carpets in the living room and bedroom, as well as a little extra for her to buy some bedsheets and a duvet set.

Getting the carpets will help make the house more comfortable and allow her to settle in a bit easier.  It is always shocking to be reminded that people are so often re-housed in homes that are so ill equipped - with carpets being something we would all think of as an essential, and yet funding is not available.

As always we were pleased to be able to help and wish her well in her new home.
