270 - A trip to Hull for some refugees - Sept 2026

Earlier in the summer, our friends at Nomad Opening Doors https://nomadsheffield.co.uk asked if we would be able to help them fund a day trip for some of their tenants. Nomad supports people to move on from homelessness and rebuild their lives. Last year, they supported over 300 people, with 87% sustaining their tenancy and 85% progressing into education, employment or volunteering within 12 months. Over half of the people they support are aged 18–35, many of whom are unemployed, living with unresolved trauma and lacking strong support networks. At assessment, more than 70% present with mental health challenges, reflecting the level of need among those they work with. They wanted to organise a trip for some tenants living in their supported accommodation who are often unemployed, socially isolated and lacking strong support networks. Many are refugees who face additional barriers including language difficulties, low confidence and feeling disconnected from their local community. In August, 2 staff members took a group to Hull. They travelled by train and spent the day exploring the town and enjoying some fish and chips. Our member from Nomad has told us what a successful day it was. Everyone enjoyed the chance to get out of Sheffield, loved the chippy-lunch and above all enjoyed feeling valued by Nomad and the staff who had given them this opportunity along with their care and support for the day. Loneliness and isolation are among the biggest challenges many of the tenants face. Spending time together outside their usual environment helps people build friendships, gain confidence and feel part of a community. Even the journey itself provides valuable opportunities for conversation, connection and shared experience. Without our donation this day out would not have been possible - we were pleased we could send our £500 to help Nomad organise the event and are glad it was a success.
