62 - £500 to help 3 Slovak Roma families - November 2021

We have given our 62nd donation of £500 to Darnall Wellbeing (DWB), who have used it to help 3 Slovak Roma families who have settled in Sheffield and live in Darnall. DWB have supported these families with their EU Settlement Scheme applications and continue to work with them to help them build new homes and improve the quality of living for themselves and their children.

They work with other wonderful local charities to support these, and many other families to furnish their homes, provide food, clothes, etc but there are always gaps, and Darnall Wellbeing was nominated so that 500 together could help them fund some additional essential items for 3 particular families.

💙  A 22 year old Slovakian woman, who has left her family home and is starting on her own. She is receiving help and advice and going through a program which will help her with studies and work. She has been allocated temporary accommodation, and is receiving some furniture, clothes, food etc from other charities, but there were a number of household essentials, toiletries, bedding that she did not have, and we were able to help DWB go out and buy those things for her.

💙  A single mum of two who lives in a rented accommodation with her mother in law. They pay a high rent and struggle to live from month to month. She has been referred to Citizen Advice and is receiving help with applying for a council house. She is now at a late stage of pregnancy and is expecting a baby girl. She is also being supported by the wonderful Baby Basics, but we have helped buy some additional new baby items such as muslin cloths, baby bath, milk bottles, sleeping bag, baby suits and socks.

💙 A young couple with their 1 year old son wanting to start on their own and no longer depend on parents and family. Dad has just found a job and they are in the process of sorting universal credit. So far they had £0 income and depended entirely on their family who are also struggling themselves.

They managed to find an unfurnished flat for rent in Darnall. They went in, cleaned the flat and tried to make it suitable to live in.

St Vincent’s - a charity that supplies furniture reacted immediately and provided as much as they could. However, the couple needed essential items such as pans and pots, cups, glasses, utensils & a kettle.  Through our funds, DWB have been able to provide these as well as a wooden highchair that converts into a separate table and chair once the toddler grows. We have helped this young family to make the empty flat feel more like a home.

We are really grateful to Darnall Wellbeing for using our donation so carefully.  We are proud to have come together with them and other fantastic local organisations including Sharewear, Baby Basics & St Vincents to make a huge difference to these families, helping them and their children to have a strong start to their lives in Sheffield.  They all send the warmest of thanks - including this lovely message:

‘You have given me a lot of reasons to be grateful. You are prepared to help anyone who is in a difficult situation.  You have helped my family so much,  Thank you from all my heart for all your support’
